Confluence

Confluence

Where the Wenatchee
flows into the Columbia,
just upriver
at the water’s edge,
at four o’clock on a hot afternoon,
brush fires to the northwest,
T.J. Jensen and Amelia Westmark
said their vows, put rings
on each other’s fingers,
tied a fisherman’s knot, kissed,
and were pronounced Mr. and Mrs.
Family and friends cheered,
while a passing freight
blew its whistle twice,
mournful and sweet,
sounding the confluence.
